Allopurinol is used for the prevention of urate bladder stones. It is available as 100mg and 300mg scored tablets. The usual starting dose for dogs is 5mg/pound by mouth once a day. The medication should be given with food. It should not be given to pregnant or nursing animals and should not be used in puppies or kittens.
